Classic Mojito Recipe

The classic mojito is one of the most refreshing cocktails you can make. Bright lime, fresh mint, a touch of sugar, and bubbly soda come together for a light, crisp drink that’s perfect for hot days, cookouts, or relaxing nights. Simple ingredients, but technique matters—and this version gets it right.

Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 5 min | Cook Time: 0 min | Total Time: 5 min

Why This Works:

Fresh lime and mint create a bright, refreshing balance while soda keeps it light and easy to drink.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1/2 lime, cut into wedges
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 6–8 fresh mint leaves
  • Club soda (or soda water)
  • Ice

Tools Needed:

  • Highball glass
  • Muddler (or back of a spoon)
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Bar spoon
  • Citrus knife

Prep:

  1. Cut lime into wedges
  2. Lightly rinse mint leaves (don’t bruise them yet)

Instructions:

  1. Add lime wedges and sugar to your glass
  2. Use a muddler to gently press and twist until:
    – Sugar starts dissolving into lime juice
    – Mixture becomes slightly syrupy
  3. Add mint leaves and lightly press (don’t crush hard — releases flavor without bitterness)
  4. Fill the glass with ice
  5. Pour in white rum
  6. Top with club soda
  7. Stir gently to combine
  8. Garnish with extra mint and a lime wedge
  9. Serve immediately

What is Muddling?

Gently pressing ingredients (like lime and mint) to release juice and oils without shredding them. Think press + twist — not smash.

Quick Tip:

Club soda = just carbonated water. Do NOT use tonic water (it’s sweet and bitter and will ruin the drink).

Notes:

  • Don’t over-muddle mint — it turns bitter if crushed too hard
  • Always use fresh lime juice (not bottled)
  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on how sweet you like it
  • Crushed ice gives a more authentic feel, but cubes work fine

Goes Great With:

Grilled food, tacos, seafood, or light appetizers
