Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks (Crispy Outside, Gooey Inside)

These air fryer mozzarella sticks come out perfectly crispy on the outside and melty on the inside—without the mess of deep frying. The secret is freezing and double coating, which locks everything in so you get that perfect cheese pull every time.

Serves: 3–4 | Prep Time: 10 min (+ freeze time) | Cook Time: 6–8 min | Total Time: 20 min

Why This Works:

Freezing and double coating prevent the cheese from leaking while creating a crispy, golden shell.

Ingredients:

  • 10–12 mozzarella sticks
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional garnish: parsley
  • Marinara or ranch (for dipping)

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Air fryer
  • 3 bowls (for breading station)
  • Tongs or fork
  • Baking sheet or plate (for freezing)
  • Measuring cups/spoons

Prep:

  1. Freeze mozzarella sticks for at least 1 hour
  2. Set up breading station:
  3. Bowl 1: flour, Bowl 2: beaten egg, Bowl 3: breadcrumbs + garlic powder + salt + pepper

Instructions:

  1. Coat mozzarella sticks in flour
  2. Dip into egg
  3. Roll in breadcrumbs (press firmly so it sticks)
  4. Repeat egg + breadcrumbs for a double coating
  5. Place coated sticks in air fryer basket in a single layer
  6. Air fry at 390°F for 6–8 minutes until golden
  7. Watch closely so they don’t burst
  8. Serve immediately with marinara or ranch

Notes:

  • Freezing is KEY to prevent cheese from melting too fast
  • Double coating = better crunch and less leaking
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket
  • If cheese starts leaking, pull them immediately
  • Serve right away for best texture

Quick Tip:

If you want extra crunch, spray lightly with oil before air frying.

Goes Great With:

Marinara sauce, ranch, garlic aioli, wings, burgers, or game day spreads
